Description

You need to explain how Calculus can be used in determining
the trajectory of shrapnel of an explosion. Please

look at the rubric in the files to determine how to exactly
write it. There needs to be a minimum of 5 academic

sources from journal articles or books. Please write it
professionally because it is 20% of my final grade.

SWU Calculus Research Paper

Research Project 10%

Each student will research and write on a calculus topic of
your choosing. The paper will include a minimum of 5 pages of
double-spaced text and will explore an application of calculus
chosen from the topics list already provided. Sources may include
the textbook but must also include a minimum of 5 journal articles
and/or books. Diagrams, graphics and tables are encouraged, but do
not count toward the 5 page requirement. Projects will be graded
according to the grading rubric below.

Grading Rubric

o Thesis is easily identifiable and clearly stated in one
sentence

o Thesis is focused and specific, rather than general or
vague

Body

o Flawlessly supports the thesis provided in Introductory
Paragraph

o Expression of Mathematical Ideas

Provides flawless organization of mathematical thinking and
use of the language of mathematics to express ideas precisely

o Interconnectedness of Mathematical Ideas

Demonstrates flawlessly the interconnectedness of
mathematical ideas and how they build on one another

o Understanding of Mathematical Practice

Thoroughly explains the application of mathematical ideas in
actual practice, to include, but not limited to problem solving,
reasoning, communicating, connecting, and representing

Concluding Paragraph

o Thesis is restated in a way that reflects the information
included in the essay

o The closing statement provides adequate closure

o No new information in introduced

Fluency

o Word choice, syntax, and grammar are above average

o Sentence structure is advanced and varied

detract from the reader s understanding of the essay s topic.

o Author s voice is engaging and constantly maintained

o Quotations are inserted following the ICE method.

Formatting

o MLA formatting is followed consistently and correctly

o Proper citations are included

Evidence of Research

o Only academic sources are used

o All sources are academic mathematical sources

o Requirement for minimum number of sources is met

and is appropriately summarized or paraphrased.

80-89% B (Above Average Work)

o Proficiently supports the thesis provided in Introductory
Paragraph

use of the language of mathematics to express ideas precisely

o Interconnectedness of Mathematical Ideas

Demonstrates proficiently the interconnectedness of
mathematical ideas and how they build on one another
