Dilemmas can
arise between the duty of care and an individual's rights because
it is a clients right to refuse the service offered to them at any
time they decide they do not want to receive the care, however it
is my duty of care to ensure that, should this issue arise, is
supported accordingly in this situation and that their choice is
recorded correctly and reported to the correct people and/or
authorities. For example, in my role as a mental health support
worker it is part of my duty of care to help some clients with
administration of their medication to help ensure that they
maintain good mental health as well as their physical health. One
client, when I went to administer her medication, she decided that
she did not want to take her

An example of
is would be when a client with learning disabilities was being
taken advantage of regarding money, the client had mentioned to me
that her neighbour had asked her to buy her some cigarettes and had
said the money would be repaid two weeks later. I pointed out to
the client how much the cigarettes would cost and asked if she
could afford to lose that amount of money if her neighbour failed
to repay her for the cigarettes. The client then had time to
reflect on what I had said and disclosed to me that she did not
want to buy the cigarettes but she felt pressured to buy them and
was fearful about what would happen if she didnt, she also had not
realised or been told how much it was going to cost her. To help
resolve this situation I suggested that if she did not want to buy
the cigarettes that she simply told her neighbour that her support
worker would not take her to buy cigarettes as she was a non
smoker. I then recorded the incident in the client's file and
reported it to the relevant people, my manager and the client's
care manager, who then referred it on to outside authorities.
Although it is a clients right to spend their money however they
see fit it is my duty of care to advise them the best way to budget
and spend it
