Essay On Zika Virus

The recent spread of the fatal Zika virus throughout Central and South America has left the world in shock. The entrance the virus into Miami has enhanced the scare even more. Now that it has become a realistic problem to the United States, the thought of personal safety comes to mind. There is a global panic erupting and it is obvious that this disease needs to be stopped. This mosquito-transmitted infection can be passed onto a human with as little as one bite, and because it is a virus, there is no absolute cure for it. Seeing these facts, the only thing that can be done is preventing it from moving any further. Zika has proven that it is a threat around the world, so to ensure that the country stays safe and this epidemic is contained, …show more content…
According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, “About 80 percent of people who are infected with Zika virus may not have any symptoms. Illness may develop in 20 percent of infected people within 3 to 7 days after a bite from an infected mosquito. Common symptoms of Zika virus infection include fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis (red eyes), muscle pain or headache. Severe symptoms and fatalities are uncommon” (“Zika Virus”). The author reports that not everyone with the virus will become sick, and some might never show symptoms. This is important because there is no clear way to be certain that you are not infected. The uncertainty of Zika is partly why it has become such a problem. If someone is unaware they have the disease, they could easily pass it on to others. Aside from the dangerous symptoms, the real difficulty is how it affects pregnant women. Zika virus can be given from the mother to the baby throughout pregnancy as can result in a condition called microcephaly (the head is smaller than normal because the brain has not properly developed or is not growing) (“Zika Virus” par. 4).
