History 313Discussion Paper #1 –Instructions:1. Write a 2-3 page discussion paper on ONE of the topics/questions below. The paper should no more than 3 pages and follow all of the conventions of an academic history paper (12pt, Times New Roman font, double spaced, citations in Chicago Style: citation guidelines below).2. Please submit a hard copy to me and an electronic copy to the Turnitin drop box on Blackboard. What is a “discussion paper”?It is a presentation of your understanding of the topic based on your reading and the lectures and material presented in class thus far. I am looking for you to think deeply about the question and to analyze what you have learned so far. I am looking for insight.Format:1.Heading with name, class, professor’s name, date and which readings you are addressing.2.12pt , Times New Roman, double spaced3.Citations – Citation guidelines are below. (External reading on the subject is NOT required!, or even encouraged, but if you do, please be sure to present your own understanding of the issue and cite any external sources you use with footnotes)____________________________________________________________________Assignment: Every primary source presents a particular perspective. Reading primary sources allows us not only to gain insight into a particular event and time, but also by analyzing wording and placing documents in their broader historical context we gain insight into the issues of the time. Each of these documents deals with local issues and is clearly responding to the trends and events in the wider world and, in particular, the West. This assignment requires that you analyze the primary sources and discuss their significance. Use the “Tips” provided below to help you think analytically about the documents. Like any other history paper, you should focus on a thesis—the conclusion you have reached about the significance of the source as a result of your careful reading and analysis—and then support your thesis with evidence from the documents.Pick one of the following documents on Blackboard to write your paper on:1. Read “Jamal al-Afghani Answers Ernest Renan’s Critique of Islam” (found on Blackboard, from Khater, 25). Use the discussion questions at the beginning of the reading and the “tips” below to critically analyze the document.OR2. Read BOTH “Qasim Amin Argues for the Emancipation of Women” (Khater, 61) AND “Bahithat al – Badiya Advocates Greater Educational and Economic Rights for Egyptian Women” which can be found in one document on Blackboard (Khater, 74). Compare and contrast the two documents:How does each author identify the problem?What remedies are put forth?What is the goal of those remedies? For men? For women? For society?Citation Guidelines:Citations: We will use Chicago Style citations and we will use the simplest form, parenthetical citations. Parenthetical citations are acceptable when the essay refers to only one or two sources. (For multiple sources, footnotes are required.)Citations are required in three situations:1.A direct quote.2.When using an idea or the analysis of another author, even when it is not a direct quote and in quotation marks.3.When citing data.Format for Chicago style parenthetical citations is as follows: (Author’s name, page #).Example: “Charlemagne’s empire was held together by personal relationships…” (Frankforter, 233) Note- NO “p” or “pg” precedes the page number.TIPS for analyzing primary sources(These questions are provided to support you to provoke insight and help in analysis! They are not to be used literally to answer these questions.)Who is the author? When was the source composed?Who was the intended audience? What is the significance of the source? What can it tell us about the time and place in which the author lived? What can it tell us about the people, structures and norms of the author’s society? What is the purpose of the source? (e.g. to convey facts, to persuade, a memoir, a letter?)How do the author’s gender and socioeconomic class compare to those of the people about whom he or she is writing? What is the historical context in which the source was written and read? What unspoken assumptions does the text contain? What biases are detectable in the source? Was the original text commissioned by anyone or published by a press with a particular viewpoint?(Adapted from Mary Lynn Rampolla, A Pocket Guide to Writing in History , 6th edition, 11.)
